Before you start

Have your snippet ready.

Every site you add to GetSiteTape gets its own snippet, with its key filled in. It is the same one line on every platform.

  • A GetSiteTape account, with your site added. The free plan is enough.
  • A Shopify staff account that is allowed to edit themes

    Open your themes

    In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes. To keep a copy you can go back to, choose … → Duplicate on your live theme first.

    Edit the theme's code

    Next to your live theme, click the … button and choose Edit code.

    Paste the snippet into theme.liquid

    In the Layout folder, open theme.liquid. Find </head> and paste your snippet on a new line just before it, then click Save.

    Visit your store

    Open your store in a new tab and click around. Your first recording appears in the dashboard about ten seconds later, and the site's status changes to Installed.

See that it is working

Add ?wsr_diagnostics=true to any address on your site. A small console opens and says what the recorder is doing.

Nothing after a minute?

Open your page's source and search for getsitetape. If it is missing, the snippet was not saved or published. If it is there, check that the address you added in the dashboard is the one you are visiting.

Checkout pages

Shopify serves its checkout itself and does not load theme.liquid there, so the snippet does not run on checkout pages. Your home, collection, product and cart pages are recorded.

If you change themes

The snippet lives in the theme you pasted it into. When you publish a different theme, paste it into that theme's theme.liquid too.

Password-protected stores

A store that is still behind its password page only records the visitors who get past it, which is usually just you.
